Here’s a caricature I did of actress Anne Hathaway. I’ve been getting more and more into using Illustrator’s brushes to achieve the natural look I want.

So right now there’s all sorts of false controversy going on because Barack Obama made a reference to putting lipstick on a pig. Never mind that he was referring specifically to John McCain’s continuation of George Bush’s failed policies. McCain’s right-wing attack machine took this as an opportunity to falsely claim that Obama was making a sexist reference to McCain’s VP pick, Sarah Palin. This seems to be the fallback claim they use on anyone who dares question Palin’s lack of experience or extremist views. By that logic, doesn’t that mean anyone who questions Barack Obama is instantly a racist?

Here’s a rapid-fire illustration/logo job I did for a charity event benefiting kids with cancer. This one is a little bit Russell Benfanti, a little Bob Staake, and a whole lot of what you’ll get out of me with no pencil sketch or pre-conceived ideas in my head. This whole thing took me about three hours, start to finish.

I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, so I thought it would be cool to illustrate the latest version of the Doctor (along with my favorite of his companions, Freema Agyeman) as a classic comic book cover.

I was recently commissioned to do a digital caricature for a guy who came across my work online. He sent me a bunch of photos of himself that were all shadowy and atmospheric and generally designed to make him look as emo as humanly possible. So I went ahead and did the caricature and, surprise, surprise, he came back and told me he thought my drawing was too dark and scary. Although I wasn’t getting paid much for the job, I went ahead and gave it one more crack–which is not shown here–softening him up and making him look about as innocent as choirboy. Guess the client didn’t like that one either, because repeated attempts to contact him since then because my repeated attempts to contact him for payment have come back with no response. Despite that, I have to admit, I rather like my first try, and that’s why I’m sharing it here with you kind folks.

This isn’t exactly ABC book-related, but I thought it was pretty cool nonetheless. Recently, The New Yorker magazine began a contest to redesign their uber-famous first issue illustration of Eustace Tilley. What you see here is my entry, my tribute to the late, great Charles Schulz. From what I hear, they sent out the announcements to the winners and I wasn’t one of them. Oh well. So today I’m looking through Newsarama, one of the best comic book news sites on the interweb, and lo and behold what do I see, but my very own illustration! That’s a pretty sweet concilation prize, if you ask me.

Well, here we are again. This week’s addition to my ABC book is C is for Cook. I had some debate with my wife on what sort of cook I should be doing. I even briefly flirted with the idea of changing the letter C to Chop and doing a robot sushi chef, but then I started thinking about depicting the idea that “hey, kids, it’s fun to play with knives!” And then I decided to go back to scratch. Check out my regularly updated blog Robot Alphabet for more details.
